BEFORE PURCHASING A PUPPY:

Before calling a breeder or buying a puppy we recommend to visit the page, HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD BREEDER. It is up to the individual to check if the breeder or kennel  or puppy is or can be registered by the international or national kennel clubs or specialty clubs in that country such as AKC, CKC, FCI, KC or other major kennel clubs, specialty breed clubs. Check with breeder  if the puppies parents has been thoroughly checked by foundations that screen for health problems such as OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals).  Some other associations are PennHip - University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program, the VBDM -  Veterinary Medical Database and CERF - Canine Eye Registration Foundation. Do your research of the breeder, the breed itself, breed's health and diseases, life span, puppy's parents, proper paper work, etc. before buying a puppy.

Labrador Retrievers did not come from Labrador, but from Newfoundland, where it used to help haul the fisherman's nets ashore. Labrador Retrievers were previously called Black Water Dogs, St. John's Water Dogs, or Little Newfoundlanders and Newfoundlands.
Labrador Retrievers were the first recognized as a separate breed by the English Kennel Club in 1903. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized Labrador Retrievers way back in 1917. Today, for many reasons, the Labrador Retrievers are consistently rated among the three most popular breeds of dogs. A good-natured, trainable, and intelligent dog that requires no fussy grooming and is notoriously healthy, the Labrador Retriever has truly earned its place at the top. Why, just by being its wonderful self, this dog has captivated dog lovers across America and around the world.

Labrador Retrievers are known for their willingness to please and their sunny dispositions. They are rated in the top 10 for intelligence of all dogs. Labrador Retrievers are obedient, loyal, courageous and hard workers. This makes Labrador Retrievers easy to train as house pets. Labs have an amazing ability at swimming and retrieval. Today, apart from being a gundog or a great hunting companion, Labrador Retrievers often act as guide dogs for the blind, been trained to detect or sniff out drugs and explosives. Labrador Retrievers temperament is responsive, friendly, non-aggressive, good with children and other dogs. Being a good watch dog, Labrador Retrievers will let you know when strangers are approaching. Labs are very popular as companions. Labrador Retrievers are simply a great dog.
According to American Kennel Club (AKC) standards the Labrador Retriever height at the withers for a dog is 22½ to 24½ inches; for a bitch is 21½ to 23½ inches. Any variance greater than ½ inch above or below these heights is a disqualification. Labrador Retrievers approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition: dogs 65 to 80 pounds; bitches 55 to 70 pounds.
The minimum height ranges set forth in the paragraph above shall not apply to dogs or bitches under twelve months of age.

Labrador Retriever coats have a distinctive feature, The Labrador Retriever coat should be short, straight and very dense, giving a fairly hard feeling to the hand. The Labrador Retriever should have a soft, weather-resistant undercoat. This coat provides protection from water, cold and all types of ground cover. The Lab coat may have a slight wave down the back, which is permissible. Woolly coats, soft silky coats, and sparse slick coats are not typical of the breed. Minimum light brushing of the coat will keep it in great shape.
The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification. A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable. White hairs from aging or scarring are not to be misinterpreted as brindling.
Blacks coats are all black where a black with brindle markings or a black with tan markings is a disqualification. Yellow coats may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog. Chocolates may vary in shade from light to dark chocolate. Chocolate with brindle or tan markings is a disqualification.

Another note about colors, is that their is white Labrador Retriever puppies now.
White is not a recognized color although white Labrador Retriever puppies are available. Color tends to be important to puppy owners but the Lab temperament is always the same. Quite often companion pet owners will refer to their Labrador Retriever by their color name first, such as a Yellow Labrador Retriever, a Black Labrador Retriever, a Chocolate Labrador Retriever or as a white Labrador Retriever.

American Kennel Club (AKC) Disqualifications are:
1. Any deviation from the height prescribed in the Standard.
2. A thoroughly pink nose or one lacking in any pigment.
3. Eye rims without pigment.
4. Docking or otherwise altering the length or natural carriage of the tail.
5. Any other color or a combination of colors other than black,
yellow or chocolate as described in the Standard.

The Labrador Retriever puppies are easy to raise and should be introduced to people at an early age. Labrador puppies are active and enjoy human interaction. Owners need to take time out to exercise, train and play with their Labrador Retriever puppies. Urban or country environment with a fenced yard does just fine.
Labrador Retrievers are a hardy dog. Being up-front, Labs with some Labrador Retriever breeders or Labrador Retriever kennels have potential problems with hip dysplasia, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy and skin allergies. Make sure the bloodline of Labradors Retriever breeder can give you a happy healthy puppy and provide a guarantee. But do your research as guarantee is usually they will take the puppy back, but who wants to give a puppy back to the breeder when they have invested so much love. Don't expect a breeder to pay any vet bills when they have already offered to take a puppy back. Not to scare you off Labs, as there are good breeders and puppies out there.

The life span of a Labrador Retriever is known to be 10-12 years. The Labrador Retriever litter size is usually around 7-8 puppies. Therefore their tend to be a lot of Labrador Retriever puppies for sale because of the larger litter size, besides being a great companion.

The Labrador Retriever is totally non-aggressive towards man or other animals. They make great baby-sitters for children. They were originally bred for hunting and retrieving in all types of weather conditions. This breed excels in field trials and obedience. Many have been trained for guide dogs for the blind and have been known to work up to 14-1/2 years in one case. The lab enjoys swimming and needs plenty of exercise.

Again, the Labrador Retriever is a good-natured, trainable intelligent dog that requires no fussy grooming and is notoriously healthy. Labrador Retrievers tend to have a special bond with people making them a great companion and excellent obedience dogs. Labrador Retrievers will easily win over your heart!
